So I bought medium oak brown and natural red head. The plan is to possibly get some reddish highlights by mixing the 2 colors together rather than having just a flat color brown...Can any of the colors be mixed together? I have not colored my hair in many years and am a salt and pepper gray so am a bit apprehensive. I just do not want my hair too red.....
Welcome to EarthDye's new natural hair dye community.
Hi Vicki, sorry did not see this email and we just did a major update on the website. You can mix any of the colors, what you just described is our copper top brown. However if you want more red add more red, brown, add more brown. If it is to red, you can go over it gain and it will make it darker. Most people that are using copper, use it until it gets darker, then switch to pure..... when it gets to red they switch back to copper. Hope that helps!
I've been using Light Brown with a little bit of Copper. My natural hair is mostly gray with some darker gray near the back. I may have gone grayer over the last few years but hard to tell. My hair tends to get more copper red on the very white parts of my gray. Now I want to switch to ash beach brown and mix some blonde in so it's not so mousy looking. Will that work? When I was younger I was very light ash brown and would get blonde with the sun so I thought I would go back to that. Or should I just use the blonde? I was also doing Brown on the lower section of my hair. My hair is shorter now. The top photo is a result of highlighting a little of my top section and re-henna-ing over it but it is faded. So I usually cut it but haven't found a good salon within an hour of my place. So I read where I can switch to another color and let it ombre on its own. After I do my roots with ash brown or blonde and then cut, should I do henna over all hair after that to even out the color? Some of the highlights turned green. I can usually time it well so it doesn't do that but unless you've been using henna for many years and willing to experiment, I would not recommend highlighting. It used to drive my hairdressers crazy. lol
Sorry the photos were so big. Oh dear. Here is a photo of Light Brown with Copper Brown with successful highlights and using Brown on bottom section.
Hi Lynn, basically you are mixing your own copper brown. Highlights are always going to come out lighter or redder using any color if it is from chemical hair dye. Any greens come from hair straighteners, baby shampoos, or other products. I highly recommend Harvest Moon natural aloe vera shampoo or natural henna shampoo. They work incredibly well with the colors. It should only look green for the first few hours. In your case, I would recommend light brown and ash brown mixed together if you want to blend it. Natural ash beach brown hair dye by itself will not show up very well on darker hair and might darken the highlights.
If you just want to grow it out lighter with the ombre effect yes the ash brown is great. Ombre never goes out of style, ever. So you have a lot of options, keep in mind even with ash brown you want to make sure you focus on the roots as they come in. Stay away from dr. Bonner’s shampoo, V05, and baby shampoo. Some hair straighteners like it’s a 10 will do it as well, also oils or shampoos high in oil. I have done highlights with henna in my hair no problem what so ever. Most salons use different chemical dye’s so it is hard to say which will work wich way.
The darker the hair the harder to do a highlight.
Thank you. I only use Arbonne plant-based shampoos. I don't use a hair straightener or any other salon products. I have only used henna from your web site. When I do highlight I do use a BLONDE hair lightener from Sally Beauty that has worked well in the past. It is all in the timing with lightening the henna. But I love that fact that if I mess up I can always cover with more henna. I will continue to use the ash beach brown and some blonde on my roots as it grows. I will send before and after to you soon. Thanks!
